Owners Ashley and Brandon James first visited the property in 2022 and instantly felt a connection. “We immediately fell in love with it,” Ashley recalls. “We saw so much potential and felt a deep connection to the land and its history.” After purchasing the property that June, the couple dove into renovations, determined to preserve its natural beauty and rich legacy while transforming it into a modern venue designed for unforgettable events.

Long before weddings and weekend retreats, the property was known as Camp Shawano, a Camp Fire Girls summer camp established in the 1940s. The land was purchased from John Kiser—who also donated land for nearby Kiser Lake State Park—and became a cherished summer haven. The centerpiece was the Jim Davis Lodge, a grand barn with a stone ​fireplace added in 1951, still bearing the original “Camp Shawano” name in its stonework.

Rustic Charm with Modern Comforts
The Oaks offers a variety of customizable event packages, from single-day celebrations to full three-day wedding weekends with overnight accommodations. Couples can choose from three breathtaking outdoor ceremony sites: a dock overlooking a peaceful pond, a secluded pine grove, or an open hayfield framed by evergreens. A vintage hay wagon provides charming shuttle service to and from each location.

The Venue Lodge, once a working sheep barn from the 1800s, has been transformed into a warm and welcoming indoor space. It includes a vaulted wood-ceiling ceremony hall with grand chandeliers, a rustic reception hall, a bar space, modern restrooms, and an expansive prep kitchen. The bridal suite offers hair and makeup stations, a private bath, kitchenette, and cozy lounge area, while the groom’s room includes a pool table, bar, and changing space—ensuring everyone has room to relax and prepare.

Overnight lodging is available in a variety of spaces, including two renovated guest houses and nine restored cabins, three of which offer deluxe accommodations. Whether staying for one night or a full weekend, guests can enjoy wooded trails, fishing ponds, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground, and—perhaps most charming of all—Ash and Coco, the resident Highland cows who never fail to delight wedding guests.

​Looking ahead, the James family plans to expand overnight options with luxury glamping tents placed on original concrete pads from the Camp Shawano era. With views of Kiser Lake and surrounding woodland, these future additions will offer guests a unique and memorable way to experience the property.

Mixin’s and Fixin’s is more than a diner—it’s a community hub. It’s where neighbors catch up over coffee, families gather after ball games, and old friends reconnect over breakfast. “We’ve raised our son here,” Tami says, “and now we’re watching our grandsons grow up in the same town. This place has always been home to us, and we want it to feel like home to everyone who visits.” It’s not uncommon to see three generations sharing a booth, or farmers and teachers chatting over lunch. That sense of connection and belonging is woven into the very fabric of the place, making it a special part of the Mechanicsburg community.

Giving Back and Growing Forward 
Supporting the community has always been a cornerstone of the McGuires’ mission. The diner regularly contributes to local causes, including the VFW Post, 4-H youth programs, school fundraisers, and benefit events for families in need. One Friday a month, they host a local band during lunch, turning the dining room into a cheerful gathering place filled with live music and laughter.

Looking ahead, Tami and her team are excited about what’s to come. A customer loyalty program is in development to reward regulars, and plans are underway for a refreshed menu with more kid-friendly options and take-home meals designed for busy families. They also hope to launch online ordering and a mobile app, making it easier than ever to enjoy their homemade meals on the go.

“We understand how busy life can get,” Tami says. “We want to give people the option to bring home something real, something nourishing—without the hassle. A meal that tastes like it came from your own kitchen.”

Since its inception over three decades ago, Chamber Night at the Races has grown into the busiest night of horse racing at the fair, featuring live harness racing, a packed grandstand, and a night-long series of prize raffles generously sponsored by local Chamber members. 

What started with television giveaways has evolved into a tech-lovers’ dream: recent years have featured prizes such as Ring doorbells, iPads, Kindles, Apple Watches, and more. Each prize sponsor is acknowledged during the event with a live narrative read over the grandstand speaker system and featured in a live broadcast by the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association, giving businesses a powerful spotlight before a captive audience. 

“We’ve built something really special here,” said Randy Leopard, Champaign County Fair Board member and long-time partner in the event. “Many other fairs have tried to replicate Chamber Night at the Races, but none have matched the success and energy we’ve created in Champaign County. The partnership between the Chamber and Fair Board is truly unique—and it shows.” 

Sara Neer, Executive Director of the Chamber, echoed the sentiment: 
“This event is the perfect example of what happens when community and business come together. It’s festive, it’s fun, and it gives our members an incredible opportunity to engage with the public.”

From Urbana to Underwater Innovation 
Dr. Dave’s journey started with fishing lines in Michigan’s lakes and greenhouses in Urbana, and wound through marine biology studies at LSU and a Ph.D. in Wisconsin. His early work in the Aquaculture Research Lab at the University of Wisconsin introduced him to the then cutting-edge concept of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). When an abandoned poultry farm near Urbana presented itself—with abundant water resources and room to grow—it was the perfect place to bring his vision to life. Freshwater Farms of Ohio became the first commercial RAS operation in the world to raise rainbow trout, a species notoriously picky about water quality. Today, it’s the longest running RAS facility in the U.S., thanks to the Smith family’s dedication to smart, sustainable design.

A Splash of Family Fun 
But Freshwater Farms isn’t just for fish lovers—it’s a full family experience. From interactive aquatic displays and critter encounters to the world’s first sturgeon petting zoo, visitors get to dive into the watery world of aquaculture in the most engaging way. You’ll also find pygmy goats, peacocks, ducks, turtles, salamanders, and more, plus the unforgettable sight of a trout feeding frenzy. The farm’s eco-restoration projects are equally exciting, featuring native wildflowers, vegetables, herbs, and beneficial insects—all part of a growing commitment to biodiversity and sustainability.

Fresh, Flavorful, and Farm-Raised
The heart of the operation is still the rainbow trout—hand-filleted, deboned, and ready to cook—but the farm grows and sells 20 other species for pond stocking. They also boast their own seafood processing facility, where visitors can find ready-to-eat smoked salmon and trout, along with a wide variety of heat-and-eat seafood dishes. All are “Dr. Dave Approved” for both quality and sustainability.

During growing seasons, the farm’s R.A.I.N.B.O.W. project—Reusing And Integrating Nutrient Byproducts Of Wastewater—produces fresh herbs, tomatoes, greens, peppers, gourds, and more, showing how food and fish can work together in a full-circle system.

Shop, Sip, and Savor
The on-site retail farm store is a must-visit, offering everything from house-made seafood products to local honey, wines, souvenirs, discovery toys, and curated gifts. Local restaurants proudly serve Freshwater Farms’ offerings, but there’s nothing quite like browsing the bounty right at the source.

Celebrations and Community
What started as a farm has bloomed into a hub for events and gatherings. The team has added new wedding and event venues nestled by scenic ponds and WaterSmith fountains—innovative water features designed on-site and now sold nationwide. They also host special dinners, seasonal events, and group tours, with updates shared on Facebook and fwfarms.com. 

One of the biggest highlights of the year is the Ohio Fish & Shrimp Music Festival, held the three Saturdays after Labor Day. Since 2002, it’s drawn thousands of visitors for music, food, and fun. The farm also helped create and maintain the Pointe North Nature Park, open to the public and surrounding the farm on two sides.

Always Open for Discovery 
Open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm, year-round, Freshwater Farms invites everyone to stop by—whether for a few minutes of trout watching or a full afternoon of exploring. They welcome RV travelers through Harvest Hosts and RV Overnight, and even offer EV charging for eco-minded guests.

For Kalen, the festival was never just about history—it was about love. The love of a son for his father, Charles “Tim” Howell Jr.. The love of a grandson for his grandmother, Barbara Howell, who spent her life advocating for her community. And the love of a man for the town that raised him. “In the months after my father passed, I had so many conversations with people who told me stories about him—things I never knew,” Kalen recalls. “It made me think about my grandmother, her legacy, and how much of our history wasn’t being told. I realized we needed a space to share those stories. And we needed to do it together.”

Inspired by those conversations and the national recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, Kalen set out to create an event that would do more than just celebrate Black heritage—it would bring people together during a time of division, reconnect families, and preserve Urbana’s untold stories.​
