Every community has its storytellers, performers, and dreamers—but some go on to entertain audiences far beyond their hometown.

This March, we’re celebrating “Ohio Entertains,” highlighting four remarkable entertainers with roots right here in Champaign County. From the earliest days of Hollywood’s silent film era to today’s comedy stages and television screens, these performers prove that talent from small towns can reach the biggest audiences.

Meet some of the entertainers who helped put Champaign County on the entertainment map: Clancy Brown, Damon Darling, Matt Rife, and the legendary Gish Sisters.
When it comes to memorable characters in film and television, few actors bring the commanding presence of Clancy Brown. Born in Urbana, Ohio, Brown has spent decades building one of the most recognizable careers in Hollywood as a character actor and voice performer.

Brown first gained widespread attention for his role as the intimidating villain The Kurgan in the cult classic Highlander (1986). His powerful voice and larger-than-life presence quickly made him a natural fit for complex and unforgettable roles.

Over the years, Brown has appeared in a wide range of films and television series, including The Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers, Carnivàle, Billions, and Dexter: New Blood. Whether portraying a ruthless antagonist, a determined lawman, or a commanding authority figure, Brown brings a depth and authenticity to every role he takes on.

Beyond live-action performances, Brown has also become one of the most recognizable voices in animation. Many fans know him best as Mr. Krabs on Nickelodeon’s long-running series SpongeBob SquarePants. His voice work has appeared in numerous animated films, television shows, and video games, making him a familiar presence to audiences of all ages.

Though his career has taken him around the world, Clancy Brown’s story began right here in Urbana, where his passion for storytelling and performance first took shape. Today, he remains one of Champaign County’s most notable connections to the entertainment industry.

Comedy often works best when it reflects real life—and that’s exactly what makes Damon Darling’s style of humor so relatable.

A native of Urbana, Ohio, Darling has built a career around finding the funny side of everyday experiences. His comedy draws inspiration from relationships, small-town culture, and the moments that everyone can recognize from their own lives.

Darling began performing stand-up comedy and quickly discovered a knack for connecting with audiences through storytelling and quick observations. His performances blend energetic stage presence with down-to-earth humor that feels both personal and universal.

In recent years, Darling has also gained attention through social media videos and online sketches, where his comedic takes on everyday situations have attracted a growing following. The digital stage has allowed him to bring his brand of humor to audiences far beyond Ohio.
Today, Darling performs stand-up shows across the country, continuing to build his reputation as a comedian who can turn ordinary moments into unforgettable laughs.

For many fans, his humor feels familiar—and that’s part of the charm. The small-town experiences that helped shape his perspective remain at the heart of his comedy.

In the world of stand-up comedy, timing and authenticity are everything—and Matt Rife has built his career on both.

Raised in North Lewisburg in Champaign County, Rife discovered his love for comedy at a young age and began performing stand-up while still a teenager. Those early performances helped him develop the stage confidence and quick wit that would eventually define his comedic style.

Rife first gained national attention through appearances on MTV’s comedy show Wild ’N Out, where his improvisational skills and charisma made him a standout performer. From there, he continued to expand his audience through touring and online content.

In recent years, Rife’s popularity has surged thanks to viral stand-up clips and crowd interactions that showcase his ability to think on his feet and connect directly with audiences. His growing fan base has helped him sell out comedy tours and release stand-up specials that have reached millions of viewers.

Long before Hollywood became the center of the film industry, two sisters from Urbana, Ohio helped shape the early art of motion pictures.

Lillian and Dorothy Gish, known collectively as the Gish Sisters, became two of the most influential actresses of the silent film era. Their careers began in theater as children before they were introduced to pioneering filmmaker D.W. Griffith, who would help launch them into the world of cinema.

Lillian Gish quickly became one of the most celebrated actresses of early film. Her performances in movies such as The Birth of a Nation, Intolerance, and Broken Blossoms demonstrated a powerful emotional depth that helped define silent film acting. With expressive movement and subtle facial expressions, she helped create a new language for storytelling on screen.

Dorothy Gish also built a successful film career, often appearing in both dramatic and comedic roles.
Known for her lively personality and strong screen presence, she brought warmth and energy to the early days of cinema.

Together, the sisters appeared in dozens of films and played an important role in shaping the techniques and traditions that would influence generations of actors and filmmakers.

Their legacy continues to be recognized by film historians and cinema lovers around the world. And their story begins right here in Urbana, where two young performers from Champaign County helped pioneer an entirely new art form.
